Somnia / Compare / Framer alternative
Concept in development. Phase 0 prototype is live.
A Framer alternative, for plain files.
Framer is a polished hosted design and publishing tool. Somnia is a local editor in development for people who want the real HTML and CSS on their own disk. This page tries to compare them fairly.
Status. Somnia is in development. Only the Phase 0 browser prototype exists today. The native desktop app, the AI layer, framework support, the extension SDK and any download or purchase are not available yet.
The short version
Choose Framer if you want to design and publish a site on a managed platform today. Watch Somnia if you want to edit files you own, deploy wherever you like, and can wait for a product that is not finished.
Side by side
| Framer | Somnia (planned) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where your project lives | Hosted platform | Plain HTML, CSS and JS files on your disk (design principle) |
| Publishing | Built in | Not built in. Deploy to services you choose (planned, Phase 3). |
| Code ownership | Check the vendor for export limits | Your files are the project, no project format |
| Pricing model | Subscription per site (check the vendor) | Planned: free tier, one-time license, optional subscription. Not for sale yet. |
| Design polish | Mature | Early. Basic visual editing works in the prototype. |
| AI | Check the vendor | Planned (Oneiroi, Phase 3): sees the canvas, shows a diff before applying. Not built. |
| Maturity | Established product | Early prototype |
What differs in approach
Somnia renders your real page in a browser canvas and writes readable code back. There is no proprietary canvas format between you and the output. That is the main design idea, and it is also a limit: Somnia will not bundle hosting, a CMS or a design-to-publish pipeline.
When to stay with Framer
If you want animation-heavy marketing sites, built-in hosting and a single tool from design to published page, a hosted platform fits better. Somnia does not plan to replace that.
Comparison notes
Framer is a trademark of its owner and is used here only to name the product being compared. Somnia is not affiliated with or endorsed by it. Information about Framer reflects publicly available descriptions and may be out of date; check the vendor for current details. Somnia statements describe plans unless marked as working in the prototype.
